Students in grades 3-5 will use the areas of the Iowa Core Curriculum listed below to gain a deeper understanding of a part of Iowa. Whether, history, an annual celebration, industry, or other areas of interest, students will become more familiar with their chosen area. As students learn more about a topic on their home state they will learn more about the people in our geographic area and how we fit into our Midwest region. Using their skills in reading, writing, and technology students will gain an understanding of how to create a presentation maintaining copyright. All students are required to analyze one piece of data with their research being population, attendance, weather data, or anything pertaining to their topic. Some questions to generate ideas were: What do you know about your state? What would you like to know more about? If you could go anywhere in the state or participate in anything the state hosts, what would it be?

Social Studies - Geography:

  • Understand the use of geographic tools to locate and analyze information about people, places, and environments.
  • Understand how geographic and human characteristics create culture and define regions.

Literacy - Reading:

  • Use a variety of skills and strategies to comprehend nonfiction and informational text.

Literacy - Writing:

  • Engage in the information literacy process: access, evaluate, and communicate information and ideas.
  • Adhere to conventions generally established in spelling, punctuation, grammar, usage, syntax, and style appropriate to genre and writing situation.

Mathematics - Data Analysis/Statistics and Probability:

  • Represent and analyze data using tallies, pictographs, tables, line plots, bar graphs, circle graphs and line graphs.

21st Century Skill - Technology Literacy:

  • Use technological resources to develop and refine questions for investigation.
  • Understand and practice appropriate legal, and safe uses of technology for lifelong learning.
